In the early 1960s, Viking Cue started in the basement of a poolroom in Stoughton, Wisconsin. Founder Gordon Hart would travel to various tournaments peddling his unique style of hand-made cues. In a short period of time, Viking cues became popular and attracted some notable top players, including legendary player New York Fats, who portrayed Minnesota Fats in the Paul Newman classic film, The Hustler. As popularity gained it was apparent that Viking was outgrowing its subterranean confines. As demand increased in the late 60’s, the old poolroom was sold and Viking Cue was moved to its current location in Madison, Wisconsin. Production capabilities expanded and the company grew steadily over the next two decades as Viking cues were sold throughout the United States and abroad.
In 1986, an old pool shark portrayed by Paul Newman, and a young Tom Cruise starred in the Martin Scorsese film, The Color of Money. The movie was a smash and created a boom in the billiard industry and with that, sent sales of Viking cues sky-rocketing.
Over the next two decades, Viking became an industry giant and proudly served its distributors and players throughout the world. Co-Founder Nancy Hart, helped to make Viking a household name. She was very active in the Billiard Congress of America, Billiard & Bowling Institute of America, and was the first woman elected as president of that organization.
The late 2000’s was a low point for Viking Cue. Like many other businesses of the period, overwhelming debt, soaring costs and a downturn economy forced Viking to go black and close its doors in 2010.
a new viking cue
For Viking to evolve, it required new vision. That evolution started a year later when Viking Cue reopened under the leadership of Madison Area Businessman, Mark Larson. With the assistance of a new management team, Mr. Larson’s first priority was to rehire the same craftsmen who were at the core of Viking’s successes over the years and would become the foundation for the New Viking Cue. The next step was to bring in fresh minds from diverse industries and disciplines to create a new company culture based on innovative thinking, integrity, and a passion for the product. With the new team in place, Viking was ready to build upon that heritage of craftsmanship with following main areas of emphasis:
To create the world’s best cues with an unrelenting commitment to precision and craftsmanship
To use the best raw materials we can get. To maintain quality control and manufacture nearly every component of our cues in-house and hold the same rigid quality standards on every part. In keeping this high level of quality, we can give every Viking cue a lifetime warranty, including against warpage.
To create and keep a new company culture based on creativity and innovative thinking. To use our team of craftsman, engineers and scientists who bring these ideas to life using decades of woodworking knowledge and research experience.
A new realm for this legendary cue maker, Viking performance is unmistakable and unmatched in the NEW Viking eXactShot® Pure Performance Shaft and ViKORE® American Performance Shaft. When mounted on a Viking Cue, these shafts will dominate and command the table. Performance on this level would not have been possible without the PERFECT fusion of Craftsmanship, Quality and Innovation.

the way we work
We have a veteran staff of craftsmen and specialists who do one thing, learn the heart and soul of making cues and then work to improve that process every day. The manufacturing of cues here at Viking has evolved from the realm of a single cue maker to the collective efforts from many skilled specialists. Our Viking technicians, designers, artisans and engineers add their knowledge and artistry to create the next generation of pool cues and shafts for players who demand nothing less than the best quality, beauty, and precision.
from the woods of wisconsin...
Wisconsin folks have a strong history of knowing woods. This state was essentially founded on lumber camps, sawmills and wood products. In following that tradition, all the wood used here is hand-picked and inspected by our Viking artisans. In our lush woodlands and forests, the cold weather causes slower growth in trees which creates an ultra-dense timber with tighter rings. Whether we use our state’s native hard rock maple or an exotic hardwood from the other side of the globe, it’s all done with an expert eye toward quality, beauty and above all, performance.
We don’t skimp on the details. In fact, we believe the definitive value of a Viking is in our attention to details. Although hard to see from a distance, look closely at our threaded ring work and precision CNC inlays. Rings and inlays provide the fine aesthetics when using different woods and materials, but we join them in a way that maintains the solid feel of a one piece cue. “Under the hood” you would see our exclusive finger joint dowel construction allowing our cues to play like an extension of yourself. It’s ultimately in the unseen, small details that make our hand-crafted Viking cues unique and allow them to feel as good as they look.
We’re a bit unusual within the billiards industry in this regard. At Viking, we control the process from start to finish, in one location. We feel it’s a huge difference maker in the quality of our cues. We smell the sawdust every day. Our factory is connected to our home office. That’s important, because it means we all feel a part of every cue that goes out our door and take tremendous pride in what we do. In short, we do one thing in our Wisconsin factory and that’s make the world’s best cues. One location, one team, one result — the most beautiful and best performing cues you can buy. All designed and made right here at our facility in Wisconsin.
From the pool halls in larger cities to the single-table small town taverns dotting our northern counties, we make Viking cues for you.
